Automotive Protection Built for Pacific Northwest Driving

Olympia drivers deal with a unique combination of road hazards that most vehicle protection guides don’t account for. Between the gravel spray on Highway 101, the tree sap along Capitol Boulevard, and the constant moisture cycling that accelerates paint oxidation, vehicles in the Olympia–Lacey–Tumwater corridor take more surface abuse per mile than most Pacific Northwest cities.

At Summit Window Tinting, we specialize in three services that address every layer of that problem: automotive window tinting to cut UV exposure and heat buildup, ceramic window tint for the highest infrared rejection available without signal interference, and paint protection film (PPF) to physically shield your paint from rock chips, road debris, and environmental fallout. We’re an XPEL Certified Dealer based in Tacoma, about 30 minutes south of Olympia on I-5, and we serve customers in the Olympia area daily.

If you need home and commercial window film for Olympia properties, we have a dedicated page covering residential and flat-glass services in the Olympia area.

Car Window Tinting for Olympia, Washington: Legal, Professionally Installed

Washington’s window-tint law (RCW 46.37.430) sets clear boundaries that catch many drivers off guard. Every sedan window front, rear, and sides must allow at least 24% visible light transmission (VLT). SUVs and trucks get more flexibility on rear glass, but front side windows still require 24% or lighter. Reflectivity can’t exceed 35%, and red, amber, or yellow tints are prohibited statewide.

Here’s what that means in practice: the darkest legal tint for a sedan in Washington is 24% VLT on every window except the windshield, which only allows non-reflective film on the top six inches. If you’re coming from a state like Arizona or Florida, where darker tints are standard, you’ll likely need to adjust after registering in Washington.

Washington State Window Tint Law — Quick Reference

Window Position Sedan / Coupe SUV / Truck / Van
Windshield Top 6” non-reflective only Top 6” non-reflective only
Front Side Windows ≥ 24% VLT ≥ 24% VLT
Rear Side Windows ≥ 24% VLT Any darkness
Rear Window ≥ 24% VLT Any darkness
Max Reflectivity 35% 35%

We install exclusively with XPEL PRIME window films that are state-certified and come with a manufacturer compliance sticker placed between the film and glass on the driver’s side door—exactly where Washington law requires it. Every installation at Summit is guaranteed to pass any traffic stop meter test.

Ceramic Window Tinting: Why Olympia Drivers Are Upgrading

Standard dyed window films block visible light to create shade, but they do almost nothing about infrared heat, the radiation that actually makes your cabin feel like an oven. Ceramic window tint uses nano-ceramic particles embedded in the film to target infrared wavelengths directly, rejecting significantly more heat at any given VLT level. The practical difference is dramatic: a 35% VLT ceramic film rejects more heat than a 5% VLT dyed film while transmitting seven times more visible light.

This matters in Olympia because the weather pattern is deceptive. Summers in the Olympia basin regularly push into the mid-80s, and the low angle of winter sun creates concentrated glare along Capitol Way and I-5 that standard tint doesn’t adequately address. Ceramic tint handles both heat rejection in summer and glare reduction year-round without creating the hazy, purplish appearance that cheap dyed films develop within 2–3 years.

XPEL PRIME Film Comparison — Ceramic vs. Standard

Film Line IR Rejection UV Rejection Signal Safe Warranty
PRIME CS (Entry) 28–38% 99% Yes Lifetime
PRIME HP Up to 66% 99% Yes 10 years
PRIME XR (Ceramic) Up to 80% 99% Yes Lifetime
PRIME XR PLUS (Ceramic) Up to 98% 99% Yes Lifetime

At Summit, the majority of our Olympia customers choose PRIME XR PLUS for side and rear glass and a 70% VLT ceramic film on the windshield. The 70% shade is functionally clear; you can’t see it, but it still blocks 92% of infrared heat and 99% of UV through the largest glass panel on your vehicle. For Tesla owners and Rivian drivers heading to and from Olympia, ceramic tint is especially important because the large glass roofs on these vehicles transmit substantially more solar heat than conventional vehicles.

Paint Protection Film (PPF) for Olympia Vehicles: What to Know Before You Buy

Paint protection film is an optically clear urethane layer typically 8 mils thick that bonds to your vehicle’s painted surfaces and absorbs physical impacts that would otherwise chip, scratch, or stain the factory finish. Unlike ceramic coatings, which provide chemical resistance and hydrophobic properties but zero impact protection, PPF is the only aftermarket product that actually stops rock chips.

For Olympia drivers, this is a practical concern, not a cosmetic luxury. The I-5 corridor between Olympia and Tacoma is one of the highest-debris stretches in Pierce and Thurston counties. Construction zones near the SR 512 interchange kick up gravel year-round, and the rural highways around Capitol State Forest shed loose aggregate after every rainfall. We see the damage daily in our shop vehicles with fresh paint correction that picks up three or four new chips on the 30-minute drive home.

Protection Comparison: PPF vs. Ceramic Coating vs. Wax

Feature XPEL PPF Ceramic Coating Traditional Wax
Rock Chip Protection Yes (8 mil barrier) No No
Self-Healing Yes (heat-activated) No No
UV Protection Yes Yes Minimal
Hydrophobic FUSION variant Yes Temporary
Scratch Resistance High (physical barrier) Moderate (chemical) None
Lifespan 5–10 years 2–5 years 1–3 months
Warranty 10-year manufacturer Varies (1–5 yr) None

Summit installs XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS exclusively. As a certified XPEL installer, we use XPEL’s Design Access Program (DAP) to precision-cut every panel from a digital template matched to your vehicle’s exact year, make, and model. The film is never cut on the car, eliminating the risk of blade marks on your paint. Owner Lucas Gonzalez is a finalist in the International Window Film Association competition, bringing a level of installation precision that shows in the finished result.

I could not be happier with the experience I had working with Lucas and his team at Summit Detailing. I wanted a tint, full stealth PPF and ceramic coating for my new car but was apprehensive about the process and cost. Lucas spoke to me multiple times on the phone and met me at the shop to discuss the process and benefits of each treatment. I decided to move forward with everything and am so happy that I did. The car looks awesome and its clear that Summit's attention to detail is their number one priority. They even schedule a follow-up visit a couple of weeks after install to double check their work and make sure the customer is still happy and things look good. If you're looking for tint or exterior vehicle protection, Summit is the way to go!

Lucas provided outstanding customer service throughout the entire process. He took the time to explain every detail and patiently answered all of my questions. The quality of the tint was by far the best I have experienced in over 22 years. From one veteran to another, Lucas, keep up the great work! I strongly encourage my fellow veterans to support this veteran-owned business. And if you love and support America, please consider supporting this veteran and his business. Highly recommended!

I've been a long-time customer of Summit; they've tinted and wrapped countless vehicles for me over the years, always with excellent quality. For my most recent vehicle, I tried to save a few dollars and went with a "friend of a friend" for a PPF wrap instead of Summit. It did not go well; the workmanship was poor and the finish was a mess. I called Lucas at Summit, and he graciously agreed to take a look. From there, he and his team worked with me to fix the damage and get it right. Lucas is an honest, straightforward businessperson who clearly takes pride in his work. My vehicle looks amazing now, far better than I expected going in. This experience reminded me why I should have gone to Summit in the first place. Lucas and his team have made me a customer for life.

I’ve had multiple cars tinted here and every time they come out looking awesome. He is a great guy, and very easy to work with. Very fair pricing.

Drove the extra distance from Covington due to this shops excellent reputation. Manager Lucus is a pleasure to do business with; professional, patient, knowledgeable, answering all my questions with up front fair pricing. I recommend this shop - get the ceramic tint, it just works better for the heat and clarity. TY ~ G

Excellent customer service. Clean shop. Easy to schedule, was in and out about an hour. Got sun strip/brow, all side windows and back window tinted. Will definitely come back again to get my other car done.

I had a great experience at Summit Window Tinting and Lucas went above and beyond on my C6 Z06. He was helpful with the process and helped me determine the best set up for my needs. I was blown away by the end result and I will be bringing my C5 Z06 to get tinted in the coming months. I highly recommend Summit Window Tinting. They will take care of you and ensure you are happy. Thank you again Lucas for all your help!

Olympia Window Tinting, Ceramic Tint & PPF FAQs

How dark can I legally tint my car windows in Washington?

All sedan windows must allow at least 24% visible light transmission (VLT). SUVs and trucks can go darker on the rear glass, but the front side still requires a minimum 24% VLT. The windshield only allows non-reflective film on the top 6 inches. Source: RCW 46.37.430.

What's the difference between ceramic tint and regular tint?

Standard dyed tint blocks visible light to create shade, but only rejects 28–38% of infrared heat. Ceramic tint uses nano-ceramic particles to target infrared wavelengths directly, blocking up to 98% of IR radiation while maintaining clearer outward visibility. Ceramic also won’t interfere with GPS, Bluetooth, or cellular signals.

How long does paint protection film last?

XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS PPF typically lasts 5–10 years, depending on driving conditions and maintenance. The film includes a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty covering yellowing, bubbling, cracking, peeling, and staining. In the Pacific Northwest, where UV exposure is moderate, we regularly see PPF performing at the upper end of that range.

Can I get PPF and ceramic tint at the same time

Yes, and many customers do. Combining PPF on high-impact areas (hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors) with ceramic tint on all glass provides comprehensive protection against both physical damage and solar heat. We can schedule both services in a single visit, typically completing the work within one day.

How far is Summit from Olympia?

About 30 minutes via I-5 North. Our shop is at 1824 112th St E, Suite F, Tacoma, WA 98445, in the Portland Avenue Business Park. From the Capitol Campus, take I-5 N to Exit 127 and head east—a straightforward drive with minimal surface street time.

Do you also serve Lacey and Tumwater?

Absolutely. We serve the entire Olympia–Lacey–Tumwater corridor as well as Centralia, Yelm, and surrounding Thurston County communities. The drive time from Lacey or Tumwater is typically the same as from downtown Olympia, 25–35 minutes, depending on traffic.
